What is "Sports Confidence"

Sport confidence (self-belief in your ability to succeed in sport) is arguably one of the most important mental qualities to help you achieve optimal performance.
Feeling (or not feeling) confident will have a major influence on your thoughts, emotions, and actions on the pitch. For example, when you're high in confidence, you may be more likely to go in for a tackle, a 1 v 1, or take a shot because your thoughts and emotions make you feel good. In contrast, when you're low in confidence, you might not go in for a tackle, you might avoid the ball, or hesitate instead of taking a shot at the goal because your thoughts and emotions fill you with self-doubt. Confidence really can make or break your game, so it is an important psychological quality to understand and master

Benefits of High Sport Confidence

When football players experience high levels of confidence, they are more likely to take calculated risks, make smart, split-second decisions, have razor sharp focus and don't get trapped in their heads, perform with precision, cope with under pressure, bounce back quickly from setbacks and mistakes, communicate better, and maintain a positive attitude. These are just a few of the benefits of high levels of confidence.

Sport Confidence Issues​​.
​
The problem with sport confidence is that it frequently fluctuates due to things that are well outside of control. For example, when we ask football players what makes them feel confident, their answers are usually similar: achievements such as winning games and trophies, scoring goals, creating assists, being selected to start in games, and praise from coaches, parents and teammates.
​
There is nothing wrong with gaining confidence from these moments. However, when these are a players' primary sources of confidence, confidence can fluctuate from game-to-game. You may have seen or experienced it yourself. One minute a player is performing well, then suddenly, they seem to lack confidence and their performance drops. It is common for players to seem like they are on a bit of a rollercoaster, and fluctuations in confidence is usually one of the reasons why.

In football, we often talk about "control the controllable". This can apply to building your confidence too!
​

Understanding and improving player motivation is vital for both individual and team success.
​
Motivation is the driving force behind players pushing themselves every training session, every game, and every day in life. It is
what drives us to be the best possible version of ourselves, to overcome challenges, and strive for excellence both on and off the pitch.
​
Building and maintaining motivation helps players stay dedicated, to persevere through challenge and adversity, and steer away from relying solely on external incentives that offer short-term bursts of motivation, and performances that are constantly up and down.
​
This e-book introduces the different types of motivation and seeks to achieve two primary aims:

To help players identify their personal sources of motivation, and how they can improve and maintain high levels of motivation.

To provide coaches with insight into what motivates their players, and how they can use this to foster both individual and team motivation.

Understanding what motivates you , plays a huge role in your long term success as motivation is the driving force that fuels us to push ourselves every day, persevere through challenges, and consistently strive to get better and better

Week 2 - Session
Building Motivation
The easiest way to think of motivation is in two halves:
​

Intrinsic Motivation
This is driven by internal factors such as personal enjoyment, it is important to you, a strong sense of passion, and a genuine and deep-rooted desire to get better

Extrinsic Motivation
This is driven by external factors such as the pressure of not letting people down, fame, money, reward, trophies, winning games, and receiving praise from coaches and team mates
​
There is nothing wrong with being motivated by external factors, but it is not enough to only be motivated in this way, as it often leads to short-term bursts of motivation and your performances on the pitch can be up and down like a roller-coaster.
​
In football, it is not always enough to just rely on your coaching sessions to get better, and it is no secret that some of the most successful football players in the world are always doing extra work
outside of training
​
This is why it is important to work on what motivates you deep down on the inside, as this will lead to consistent feelings of motivation to do extra
practice alone
​
To do this, you first need to understand internal motivation, and then you can out a plan in place to work on it. This is a good time to look back on the list of motivators you completed above and think about how many are external and internal

Now, lets have a look at internal motivation and some ways you can work on this below…
Internal motivation can be split into three different parts:

Autonomy
This is how much control you have over what you do without constant direction from coaches. Basically, it is how much of a say you have in what you practice.
​
You may not have much control over your training sessions, but this could relate to how much control you have over any extra practice you do away from training.
​
